TLDR version: I fell victim to an aging German machine and needed basic transportation to get to work.. Mechanics friends and family said it was time to send it off. It did not make me happy

Here is what still had to be dealt with:

The largest

issue was the compressor died putting the car on the bump stops. This was most likely caused by overworking the compressor due to a leaking air bag. The struts were all aged and due for replacement. Total cost would be about $2400 for parts. The clutch was aging and would slip under hard acceleration. The cam seals leaked and I think there was an issue with the other leak I dealt with last week.. There were a number of cosmetic issues including beat up paint, broken interior trim parts, and a broken CD player. Simply, there was so much to be done that I would essentially be rebuilding the entire car. The Allroad is a great car but this was not a great example.

MY purchase, a 2012 Focus SEL with a transmission that has a questionable design. The trans was serviced about 10k miles ago and Ford has acknowledge the issues and extended the warranty to 100000. My car has 40000 so I theoretically have 6 years of driving before I have to really worry about it. Its a nice appliance. Heated seats, sunroof, new Continental rubbers, 4 wheel discs. Its not Jalop but its not that bad either.

with a 3rd kid coming (we thought today) my wife needs to be able to drive both vehicles and will not drive a manual. I needed something that will be reliable and not have a lot of down time. I will have a fun car again, but I need to sort out some other financial things first. All the down time was becoming an issue and an embarrassment at work. I was becoming worried just about getting places, to work and job sites.

that is what i’m hoping for. I’d also like to turn an old MR2 into a rally beast or get an FJ80 and restore it. it wont be for a while tho. The girls like watching me work on the cars and #3 is a boy.

Nothing wrong with that car, the Focus is one of the nicest hatchbacks to drive, nicely built if you get one of the fancier versions. Good buy!

Foci are nice enough. I prefer them to the Elantra and Mazda3. Hell of a deal too - so many of them out there and all the press about the transmission has kept used prices of recent ones very low. Are you keeping the allroad, selling, or already sold?

I had a red one as a rental for about 10 days and I loved it. Amazing space in the rear and the hatch.

I wouldnt mind buying an ST or RS as my DD but knock on wood, my E46 has been fairly good in breakdowns during the past 2 years.

I guess it makes sense, I went to look at some Focuses before buying the Passat Variant (was looking at Golfs and A3 and they weren’t worth the money compared to the Passat), but the transmission things worried me and we didn’t get the extended warranty here.

I have some Focus owners friends and they all seem to love it, did you get the big SONY screen thing on yours?

Would you be willing to a writeup of a rough itemization of cost of ownership? IIRC, you got it for $3k or so, but have fixed various things throughout the last year, and then ultimately traded it in for 1/5 of it’s value... Still not as bad as my 1/10 return on a car I once owned, if it’s even a tiny consolation.

Damn I would’ve figured they would give you $1000 just for the 4 rings but it’s better than just letting it sit in your driveway. Hopefully they’ll fix it and offer it back up for sale for a few grand rather than just scrapping it.

Oh yeah whenever their offer is that low it usually is. They basically see it as if they don’t make back what they gave you in trade it was basically a small discount on the car you bought. But I will dream it gets resold just because manual allroads are so rare even if they all eventually have suspension failure.

I have a 2012 Focus SE with the DCT. The TCM crapped out at 48k miles... They extended my warranty for the trans and TCM to 150k. Go back and see if they’ll add mileage to yours.
